Suunto Core Orange Black

I’ve had my Suunto Core Orange Black for less than a year and have needed to send it in for repairs 4 times. The pins that hold the band to the watch are weak and come undone and fall out frequently. I finally convinced Suunto to send me spare pins, and I secured them myself. I’ve twice needed to send it in for button failures, and now for a display failure.

Suunto has always replaced the watch, but it is really a tedious procedure of creating a service order and mailing it in. That means no wathc for a couple of weeks. I am currently in Iraq and will need to mail it to somebody within the US to ship to handle as Suunto won’t take it from here.

You will find couple of differences between the Core and also the Vector. The storm alarm is fairly worthless, and will drive you nuts going off when the A/C turns on within the house. The sunrise/sunset feature is cute.

My suggestion is to stick with the Suunto Vector. It will hold up a lot much better

Compliments: Incredibly accurate ABC. I evaluate their readings with the actual ABC instruments. The accuracy is outstanding and surpasses the Casio Pathfinder in the dirt! The storm alarms responds to the air pressure change precisely too. The electronic compass is awesome. As soon as you set the course, the bearing indicator would show an arrow and directional text (right and left), to direct you to the correct course, which is a great feature. User installable batteries which is fantastic to save a lot of money down the road.

Complaints: The directional rotation ring is hard to turn. If you have finger nails, you’ll need to use them, if you chew your finger nails, best of luck. The alarm is a bit soft and hard to notice sometimes. The same problem as the Pathfinder. I wish they can make it louder. The wrist strap looks low-cost. The illuminator is a bit dim as well.

Tips: This watch has gained plenty of negative reps as a result of bad quality control in its manufacturer plant in China. It’s been tons of issues and reported problem. After doing a bit of investigation, it appears that Suunto has finally fixed the hardware and software bugs. When you purchase this watch, ensure the serial number starts from “918xxxxxx” onward. My own is “944″ and so far it’s great. You should e-mail the seller, to make sure they give you the updated version as noted above, then your brand new watch will not spend most of its life going back and forth in the delivery vehicles.

The display is in reverse format, this means the background is in black, and the alpha-numeric characters are in silver white. Changing the contrast in the Suunto concealed menu will help, but of course, still not as clear as the typical black letter on bright background. No fault of Suunto, but simply the way the design is. The buttons are responsive and easy to press. To navigate through the menus, the “Mode” button and the “View” button need to be pushed in different combination to get what you want. It would seem to be difficult at first, but once you understand the reasonable design, it’s pretty easy to remember. Give yourself a few days to get used to it.
